Natural Language Processing at Clemson University – 1.1 Million vCPUs & EC2 Spot Instances

A group of researchers from Clemson University achieved a remarkable milestone while studying topic modeling, an important component of machine learning associated with natural language processing, breaking the record for creating the largest high-performance cluster by using more than 1,100,000 vCPUs on Amazon EC2 Spot Instances running in a single AWS region, accessed via Omnibond's CloudyCluster.

The new OrangeFS 2.9 release adds security options to OrangeFS with new key-based and certificate-based security modes, advanced file scalability with distributed directory entry metadata and support for the latest versions of the Hadoop ecosystem, providing the reality of high performing consolidated HPC and Big Data storage. This release contains more detailed documentation and has been extensively tested on bare metal and in Openstack and AWS Cloud on the latest versions of RedHat, CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu, and Fedora.

New Release Enables MapReduce to Run On OrangeFS

The latest version of OrangeFS (Version 2.8.8), introduces client support for Hadoop MapReduce. The OrangeFS Hadoop Client allows you to run Apache Hadoop version 1.2.1, while replacing Hadoop's HDFS file system with OrangeFS. Combining these two open-source products permits massive computations on the petabyte scale with more flexibility. Additionally, OrangeFS permits modification of data within the file system.
