Hadoop Support Added

New Release Enables MapReduce
to Run On OrangeFS

The latest version of OrangeFS (Version 2.8.8), introduces client support for Hadoop MapReduce. The OrangeFS Hadoop Client allows you to run Apache Hadoop version 1.2.1, while replacing Hadoop's HDFS file system with OrangeFS. Combining these two open-source products permits massive computations on the petabyte scale with more flexibility. Additionally, OrangeFS permits modification of data within the file system. New HPCwire Article Highlights Performance Gains

OrangeFS has the ability to replace HDFS as the file system for Hadoop MapReduce. While running in this configuration the Hadoop MapReduce code does not need any modifications to run.

As explained in this technical article published on HPCwire.com, recent tests performed at Clemson University achieved a 25 percent improvement in Apache Hadoop Terasort run times by replacing the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) with an OrangeFS configuration using dedicated servers.

The OrangeFS and Omnibond teams will attend this year's LinuxFest Northwest (April 27-28) on the campus of Bellingham Technical College in Washington State.

Now OrangeFS is even better. With the June 18 release of Version 2.8.6, custom-
ers will see significant improvements in performance—especially with small files and unaligned requests, extended Linux Kernel support (including 3.x) and new Direct Interface libraries for POSIX and low-level system calls to seamlessly integrate with OrangeFS.

With this significant update, the project team also announces support for WebDAV and S3 in the initial offering of Web Pack, a separate download that will expand in future releases to include a rich toolkit for Web-based communications with OrangeFS. The The 28th IEEE Conference on Massive Data Storage (Apr 16-20), this year in Pacific Grove, CA, will dedicate a full week to computer storage technology. The symposium will include a day of tutorials, two days of invited papers, and two days of peer-reviewed, research papers.

The tutorials, which will focus on five important distributed file systems, include OrangeFS as taught by Dr. Walt Ligon, founder and chief architect. As the conference Web site plainly states, "Whether you are an implementer, a decision maker, or both, this day will be an investment in your career." Also be sure to stop by and see the OrangeFS team at Table 5 on the exposition floor.

The OrangeFS Team released updates (version 2.8.5) on January 31 for OrangeFS and its Windows Client. Both are available for download at the OrangeFS.org Download Page. Version 2.8.5 provides many bug fixes and stability enhancements, including kernel module support for newer kernels.

International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis

 

 

 

The recent SC10 (Nov 13-19, 2010) was a must-attend event for discovering the latest breakthroughs in applied supercomputing.

Members of the OrangeFS team were available on the exhibit floor in the booth for Clemson University's Partnership SC10for High Performance Computing Systems.

The Clemson Partnership is a consortium of advocates for cyber-enabled research— anchored by the University's internationally ranked Palmetto Cluster, which runs on the OrangeFS high-performance parallel file system.
